경북대 3대 융합연구원 본격 가동으로 연구중심 대전환 추진

세계적 우수 석학 원장 임명, 본격적인 3대 융합연구원(기초학문․첨단기술․바이오) 운영 시작
경북대학교는 6월 9일 글로컬대학30 사업의 핵심과제로 제시했던 3대 융합연구원(기초학문, 첨단기술, 바이오)의 원장을 임명했다.
이번에 임명된 융합연구원 원장은 정성화 기초학문융합연구원장, 한동석 첨단기술융합연구원장, 김상현 바이오융합연구원장이다. 세 명의 원장 모두 세계적으로 우수한 석학으로, 개방형 공모제를 통한 공정한 경쟁과 심사를 거쳐 임명됐다.
경북대는 올해 초 연구중심 대전환을 위한 핵심 조직으로 3대 융합연구원을 총장 직속기구로 신설했으며, 이번 원장 임명을 계기로 글로컬대학30 사업 추진에 박차를 가할 계획이다. 각 원장은 연구유닛 구성을 통한 연구플랫폼 구축, 연구 몰입형 환경 조성, 연구중심대학 전환 및 지역산업 성장과 지역혁신 등 3대 융합연구원의 목표 달성을 위한 컨트롤타워 역할을 맡게 된다.
경북대는 지난해 글로컬대학30 사업에 최종 선정돼 ▷연구중심 대전환 ▷글로벌 아카데믹 모빌리티 증대 ▷연구중심형 교육혁신 ▷청년 연구자 타운 조성 ▷지역상생 오픈교육 등 5개의 추진과제와 세부과제들을 추진 중이다.
경북대 3대 융합연구원은 세계적 수준의 우수 석학을 원장으로 초빙하기 위해 개방형 공모절차를 추진한 결과, 인류학적 3대 난제(기후변화, 환경오염, 저출산·고령화)를 중점적으로 연구하는 기초학문융합연구원 원장으로 정성화(64·경북대 화학과) 교수, 지역 신산업 핵심기술 분야(로봇, 모빌리티, 반도체, ABB)를 집중적으로 연구하는 첨단기술융합연구원 원장으로 한동석(59·경북대 전자공학부) 교수, 임상결과를 기반으로 한 바이오헬스 분야(신약, 의료기기, 헬스케어)를 중점적으로 연구하는 바이오융합연구원 원장으로 김상현(52·경북대 의학과) 교수를 각각 임명했다.
정성화 기초학문융합연구원장은 기후변화 및 환경오염 방지와 관련된 연구를 선도적으로 수행하고 있으며, 관련 연구는 하루 평균 10회 이상 인용되고 있다. 아울러 세계 학술 데이터 분석 플랫폼인 스칼라 GPS(ScholarGPS)가 발표한 ‘세계 최우수 랭킹학자(Highly Ranked Scholar)’에 3년 연속 이름을 올리고, 글로벌 정보분석 기업 클래리베이트가 발표하는 ‘세계에서 가장 영향력 있는 연구자(Highly Cited Researcher, HCR)’에 2018년부터 2022년까지 5년 연속 선정됐다. 또한 2022년에는 한국과학기술한림원 정회원에 선출됐고, 2023년에는 과학기술훈장 웅비장을 수훈하는 등 국내외 모두에서 학술적 성과를 인정받고 있는 세계적 석학이다.
한동석 첨단기술융합연구원장은 정보통신연구진흥원(현 ITTP) 디지털TV/방송사업단 단장으로 재임하는 등 관련 분야에서 선도적인 연구자로 알려진 우수 석학이다. 한 원장은 현재 한국연구재단 중점연구소인 경북대 ICT·자동차융합연구센터장으로 재직하며 산업통상자원부 국책과제, 삼성디스플레이 기업과제를 수행하고, 2024년에는 자율주행 기술 발전에 대한 공로로 대구시장 표창을 수상하는 등 활발한 연구 활동을 펼치고 있다.
김상현 바이오융합연구원장은 한국인 최초 미국 보건복지부 국가독성프로그램 project officer, 한국연구재단 신약단장(PM), 한일약리학회 및 아시아태평양 약리학회(APFP) 회장, 제4차 생명공학육성기본계획 기획위원장을 역임했으며, 2022년에는 바이오 발전 유공자로서 과학기술정보통신부장관 표창을 수상했고, 세계 최상위 2%연구자에 연속 선정되는 등 약리학 분야에서 뛰어난 성과와 권위를 보유한 우수 석학이다.
3대 융합연구원 원장들은 학사조직과 독립된 자율적 조직 운영 권한을 부여받아 다학제 연구유닛 구성 및 도전적 연구주제 발굴을 통한 융합연구 체제 구축과 대학 연구력 제고, 지역과의 연계를 통한 지역산업의 성장과 혁신, 정부출연연구소와의 학연협력플랫폼 구축 등 글로컬대학30 사업 추진의 핵심적․중추적 역할을 담당할 전망이다. 또한 원장들은 본인의 우수한 연구력을 바탕으로 연구유닛을 직접 구성하여 운영함으로써 학내 우수연구플랫폼 확산을 도모할 수 있게 된다.
향후 3대 융합연구원은 연구 결과를 바탕으로 만들어진 기술 관련 수익 및 실제 창업 성과 등을 통해 혁신적이고 실질적인 가치를 창출할 방침이다. 아울러 융합연구 마이크로디그리 교육과정을 수립하여 연구 내용을 교육과정에 실제 반영함으로써 연구중심형 교육혁신을 주도할 예정이다. 이를 통해 글로벌 연구 협력 강화와 우수한 연구 인재 육성을 도모함으로써 글로컬대학30 사업을 완수하기 위한 핵심 연구조직이자 세계적 연구 경쟁력을 지닌 연구 기관으로 거듭날 계획이다.
허영우 경북대 총장은 “세계적 석학 수준의 연구원장을 임명하고 독립적인 연구원 운영을 통해 기존 연구소와는 다른 대학의 대표 연구소로 브랜드화할 것”이라면서 “앞으로 3대 융합연구원을 통해 경북대가 연구중심대학 전환의 혁신을 이루도록 할 것”이라고 밝혔다.

World-Class Scholars Appointed as Directors of the Three Core Convergence Research Institutes (Basic Science Convergence, Advanced Technology Convergence, and Bio Convergence)
On June 9, Kyungpook National University appointed directors to its Three Core Convergence Research Institutes (Basic Science Convergence, Advanced Technology Convergence, and Bio Convergence), representing a key task for the Glocal University 30 Project.
The newly appointed directors are Jeong Seong-hwa, Director of the Institute for Basic Science Convergence; Han Dong-seok, Director of the Institute for Advanced Technology Convergence, and Kim Sang-hyun, Director of the Institute for Bio Convergence. All three directors are world-class scholars appointed following a fair competition and screening through an open recruitment system.
Kyungpook National University established the Three Core Convergence Research Institutes earlier this year, under the direct control of the university president, as key organizations for KNU’s research-oriented transformation. With the appointment of the directors, the university plans to accelerate promotion of the Glocal University 30 Project. Each director will serve as a control tower for achieving the goals of each respective research institute, namely: establishing a research platform through the formation of a research unit, creating an immersive environment for research, transforming KNU into a research-oriented university, growing local industries, and regional innovation.
KNU successfully made the final round for selection for the Glocal University 30 Project last year and is pushing for the following five major and detailed tasks: ▷ research-oriented transition ▷ increased global academic mobility ▷ research-oriented educational innovation ▷ youth researcher town creation ▷ regional win-win open education.
Using an open recruitment system to find and select world-class scholars to lead the three research institutes, KNU appointed the following three directors: Professor Jeong Seong-hwa (64, KNU Department of Chemistry), as the Director of the Institute for Basic Science Convergence, which will focus on researching the three major anthropological challenges (climate change, environmental pollution, and low birth rate and aging); Professor Han Dong-seok (59, KNU Department of Electronic Engineering), as the Director of the Institute for Advanced Technology Convergence, which will focus on core technologies for emerging regional industries, such as robotics, mobility, semiconductors, and ABB (AI, Big Data, and Blockchain); and Professor Kim Sang-hyun (52, KNU Department of Medicine) as the Director of the Institute for Bio Convergence, which will focus on the field of biohealth based on clinical results (new drugs, medical devices, and healthcare, etc.).
Jeong Seong-hwa, the new Director of the Institute for Basic Science Convergence, is leading research on climate change and the prevention of environmental pollution, and his research is cited on average more than 10 times a day. In addition, he has been named a "Highly Ranked Scholar" by ScholarGPS, a global academic data analysis platform, for three consecutive years, and was selected as a Highly Cited Researcher (HCR) by the global information analysis company Clarivate for five consecutive years from 2018 to 2022. Moreover, he was elected as a full member of the Korea Institute of Science and Technology in 2022. He is a world-class scholar recognized for his academic achievements both at home and abroad, having received the Ungbi Medal of the Order of Science and Technology Merit in 2023.
Han Dong-seok, the new Director of the Institute for Advanced Technology Convergence, is an outstanding scholar known as a leading researcher in his fields of expertise, including his career as head of the ITTP Digital TV/Broadcasting Business Group. Han is currently serving as head of the ICT and Automotive Convergence Research Center at Kyungpook National University, a key research institute of the Korea Research Foundation, carrying out not only the national objectives of the Ministry of Trade, Industry and Energy, but also the corporate objectives of Samsung Display, by actively engaging in various research activities. Moreover, he has received many accolades in his career, such as the Daegu Mayor’s Commendation for the Development of Autonomous Driving Technology in 2024.
Kim Sang-hyun, the new Director of the Institute for Bio Convergence, was the first Korean national to serve as Project Officer for the National Toxicology Program of the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services, and he has also served as head of the PM of the New Drug Development Center at the National Research Foundation of Korea, Chairman of the Korean-Japanese Pharmacological Society and the Asia-Pacific Federation of Pharmacologists (APFP), as well as Chairman of the Planning Committee for the 4th Basic Plan for Biotechnology Promotion. In 2022, he received the Minister’s Commendation from the Ministry of Science and ICT as a meritorious contributor to bio-development. He is an outstanding scholar with outstanding achievements and authority in pharmacology who is consistently recognized as a top 2% researcher worldwide.
These three new directors of the Three Core Convergence Research Institutes are expected to play key and central roles in the promotion of the Glocal University 30 Project, including the establishment of a convergence research system through the formation of a multidisciplinary research unit and the discovery of challenging new research topics, the enhancement of university research, the growth and innovation of local industries through regional connections, and the establishment of a platform for academic cooperation with government-funded research institutes. In addition, the directors will be able to promote the spread of superior research platforms within Kyungpook National University by organizing and operating research units based on their respective outstanding research capabilities.
Moving forward, the Three Core Convergence Research Institutes plan to create innovative and practical value through revenue from technology derived from their research findings and actual start-up achievements. Additionally, they plan to lead research-focused educational innovation by establishing a convergence research micro-degree curriculum that directly reflects research content in the coursework. Through these initiatives, the institutes will enhance global research collaboration and nurture excellent research talent, thereby helping KNU to transform into a key research institution with world-class competitiveness to achieve the goals set out in the Glocal University 30 Project.
Kyungpook National University President Heo Young-woo noted, “We will create KNU branded flagship research institutes different from existing research institutes through the appointment of research directors of world-class caliber and allowing them to have independent operation.” He added, “Moving forward, we will ensure that KNU achieves the innovation necessary to transform into a research-focused university through these Three Core Convergence Research Institutes.”
