15년만 국내 개최, 국내외 1,200여명 참여 속 기술·투자 전략 공유

경북대학교가 개교 80주년을 맞아 미국 매사추세츠공과대학교(MIT)와 공동으로 주최하는 국제 창업 워크숍 ‘MIT 글로벌 스타트업 워크숍(MIT Global Startup Workshop, 이하 MIT GSW)’이 3월 26일과 27일 이틀간 경북대 글로벌플라자에서 열렸다.

MIT GSW는 MIT 학생과 연구진이 주도해 매년 세계 각국을 순회하며 개최하는 세계 최고 수준의 창업 워크숍이다. 한국에서 열리는 것은 지난 2011년 서울대 개최 이후 15년 만이다. 경북대는 개교 80주년을 기념하고 글로컬대학 사업 및 라이즈(RISE) 사업의 일환으로 국제 기술 교류 확대와 글로벌 창업 문화 확산을 위해 이번 행사를 유치했다.

‘글로벌 혁신과 한국 창업 생태계를 연결하다(Connecting Global Innovation with Korea’s Startup Ecosystem)’을 주제로 열린 이번 행사에는 MIT 관계자를 비롯해 국내외 창업 전문가, 투자자, 스타트업 관계자, 대학생 등 1천200여명이 참석했다.

이번 행사는 국내외 기술 분야 리더들이 기조강연자로 나서 미래 산업 전략을 공유했다. MIT 생물공학과 마크 바트(Mark Bathe) 교수가 차세대 실리콘밸리의 방향성을 제시하고, 이종호 전 과학기술정보통신부 장관은 ‘한국의 인공지능(AI) 및 반도체’를 주제로 국내 핵심 산업에 대한 심도 있는 식견을 공유했다. 엔비디아(NVIDIA)의 토마스 베드나르즈(Tomasz Bednarz) 디렉터는 ‘자율형 AI와 물리형 AI’를 주제로 최신 기술 트렌드를 전달했다.

글로벌 창업 트렌드와 투자 전략을 다룬 워크숍 및 패널 세션도 활발히 진행됐다. 특히 ‘GSW 해커톤 엘리베이터 피치 경연’은 예비 창업자들의 참신한 아이디어를 검증받는 자리로 마련돼 주목을 받았다. 현장에는 경북대 글로컬대학 사업과 라이즈(RISE) 사업, MIT 프로그램 등을 소개하는 전시 부스도 운영돼 대학의 연구 역량과 지역 혁신 모델을 홍보하기도 했다.

(또한 이번 행사에서 열린 ‘GSW 해커톤 엘리베이터 피치 경연’에서는 경북대 재학생 팀이 우수한 성과를 거뒀다. 모바일공학과 김민재·황동규(23학번) 팀이 2위를, 모바일공학과 이동현(25학번)·장승원·정지욱(21학번), 전자공학부 문성익(21학번)으로 구성된 팀이 4위를 수상했다.)

허영우 경북대 총장은 “MIT GSW 2026 개최는 개교 80주년을 맞은 경북대가 글로벌 협력 네트워크를 확대하고 세계 유력 기관과의 협력을 강화하는 계기가 될 것이다. 특히 지역 학생과 예비 창업자들이 MIT 연구진과 글로벌 스타트업, 국제 투자자들과 직접 교류할 수 있는 자리라는 점에서 지역 창업 생태계에도 의미 있는 전환점이 될 것으로 기대한다.”라고 말했다.

- Event Marks First in Korea in 15 Years, with Over 1,200 Domestic and International Participants Meeting to Share Technology and Investment Strategies

Kyungpook National University hosted the “MIT Global Startup Workshop (MIT GSW),” a world-class international entrepreneurship forum jointly organized with the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT). The event took place from March 26 to 27 at the KNU Global Plaza in celebration of the university's 80th anniversary.

MIT GSW is a premier startup workshop led by MIT students and researchers that rotates through different host countries annually. This event marks the workshop's return to South Korea after 15 years, with the last domestic iteration held at Seoul National University in 2011. KNU successfully bid for the event to commemorate its 80th anniversary and to drive international technical exchange and global startup culture as part of its Glocal University and RISE (Regional Innovation System & Education) projects.

Under the theme “Connecting Global Innovation with Korea’s Startup Ecosystem,” the workshop drew approximately 1,200 participants. The crowd included MIT officials, domestic and international startup experts, venture capitalists, startup representatives, and university students.

The event featured a lineup of global tech leaders who shared insights into future industrial strategies, including Mark Bathe (MIT Professor of Biological Engineering), who presented on the future direction of the next-generation Silicon Valley; Lee Jong-ho (Former Minister of Science and ICT), who provided deep insights into Korea’s core industries under the theme “AI and Semiconductors in Korea;” and Tomasz Bednarz (Director at NVIDIA), who delivered a session on the latest trends in “Autonomous AI and Physical AI.”

The workshop included active panel sessions on global startup trends and investment strategies. A major highlight was the “GSW Hackathon Elevator Pitch Competition,” where aspiring entrepreneurs received professional validation for their innovative business ideas. Additionally, exhibition booths showcased KNU’s research capabilities and regional innovation models through the Glocal University and RISE projects, alongside various MIT programs.

“Hosting MIT GSW 2026 will serve as a catalyst for Kyungpook National University to expand its global cooperation network and strengthen ties with leading international institutions,” said KNU President Heo Young-woo. “We expect this to be a meaningful turning point for the local startup ecosystem, providing a rare opportunity for local students and aspiring entrepreneurs to interact directly with MIT researchers, global startups, and international investors.”
