경북대학교가 교육부가 주관하고 한국연구재단이 시행하는 ‘2026년도 인문사회 대학기초연구소 지원사업’에 선정됐다. 사업 선정으로 경북대는 향후 최대 5년간 200억원의 사업비를 지원받는다.

‘인문사회 대학기초연구소 지원사업’은 올해 처음 신설된 사업으로, 기초학문의 보호와 육성을 담당하는 거점국립대를 중심으로 인문사회 연구 거점을 마련하고 지역 정주형 연구 인력을 확보해 인문사회 분야 학문 균형 성장을 추진한다. ‘서울대 10개 만들기’ 정책과 연계된 사업으로, 올해는 경북대를 포함해 3개 대학이 선정됐다.

경북대는 이번 사업 선정에 따라 ‘시공을 잇는 영남의 지성, 새로운 사회를 여는 첨단 인문’을 슬로건으로 ‘경북인문사회연구원’을 신설한다. 국어국문학과 정우락 교수가 연구책임자를 맡아 지역 문화, 포용 사회, 첨단 융합 등 세 가지 주제를 중심으로 인문사회 연구를 수행할 계획이다.

경북인문사회연구원은 영남문화연구원과 K-포용사회연구소 등 중점 주제연구소 2곳과 28개 기초연구소를 통합 지원한다. 학문후속세대 양성을 위해 올해에만 학술연구교수 30명 이상, 학문후속세대 70명 이상을 고용할 예정이다.

이번 사업을 통해 경북대는 대학을 중심으로 지역 문화와 대구·경북형 포용사회 모델을 글로벌로 발신하는 ‘대학(경북대)·지역(경상)·세계(한국)’의 트리플 K를 바탕으로 세계 수준의 인문사회 연구를 추진한다. ‘트리플 K’는 경북대가 중심이 돼 경상권 대학과의 연계를 강화하고, 전 세계 대학 및 연구기관과 협업해 지역 기반 글로벌 인문사회 연구 거점을 구축한다는 의미도 담고 있다.

허영우 총장은 “앞으로 다가올 AI 대전환의 시대에 인간과 사회의 가치를 추구하는 인문사회 분야 연구의 중요성을 더욱 커질 것이다. 이번 사업 선정은 경북대가 지역과 세계를 잇는 글로벌 인문사회 연구 거점으로 도약하는 마중물이 될 것이다.”라고 밝혔다.

Ministry of Education Selects KNU for Humanities and Social Sciences University Research Institute Support Program with Up to KRW 20 Billion in Funding Over Five Years

Kyungpook National University has been selected for the 2026 Humanities and Social Sciences University Research Institute Support Program, led by the Ministry of Education and administered by the National Research Foundation of Korea. Through the program, KNU will receive up to KRW 20 billion in funding over the next five years.

The Humanities and Social Sciences University Research Institute Support Program was newly launched this year. Centered on Korea’s flagship national universities, which play a key role in protecting and fostering basic academic disciplines, the program seeks to establish regional research hubs in the humanities and social sciences while cultivating locally rooted research talent to promote balanced growth in the humanities and social sciences. Linked to the government’s “Creating 10 Seoul National Universities” initiative, the program selected three universities this year, including KNU.

Following its selection for the program, KNU will establish the Kyungpook Institute of Humanities and Social Sciences under the slogan, “Advanced Humanities Opening a New Society through Youngnam’s Intellectual Heritage Across Time and Space.” Professor Woolak Jeong of the Department of Korean Language and Literature will lead the institute as its director. The institute plans to conduct humanities and social sciences research centered on three key themes: regional culture, inclusive society, and advanced interdisciplinary research.

The Kyungpook Institute of Humanities and Social Sciences will provide integrated support for two specialized research institutes—the Youngnam Culture Institute and the K-Inclusive Society Institute—as well as 28 foundational research institutes. To foster the next generation of scholars, the institute plans to recruit more than 30 research professors and over 70 early-career researchers this year alone.

Through the program, KNU aims to advance world-class humanities and social sciences research based on the “Triple K” vision, linking the university (KNU), the region (Kyeongsang), and the world (Korea). Under this vision, the university seeks to promote regional culture and share a Daegu-Kyeongbuk model of inclusive society with the global community. The “Triple K” initiative also reflects KNU’s commitment to strengthening ties with universities across the Kyeongsang region while establishing a global humanities and social sciences research hub through partnerships with leading universities and research institutes worldwide.

KNU President Young-Woo Heo noted, “As we enter an era of AI-driven transformation, the importance of humanities and social sciences research that pursues human and social values will grow even further. KNU’s selection for this project will serve as a catalyst for the university’s leap toward becoming a globally recognized research hub connecting the region and the world.”
