개교 제80주년 기념식 및 비전선포식 개최… ‘세계가 주목하는 초일류 대학’ 선포

경북대학교는 5월 28일 개교 80주년을 맞아, 하루 전인 27일 오후 2시 경북대 대강당에서 개교 제80주년 기념식 및 비전선포식을 개최했다. 이날 기념식에는 김정기 대구시장 권한대행, 이인선·이달희 국회의원, 홍원화 한국연구재단 이사장, 이기정 한국대학교육협의회장, 김정겸 국가거점국립대학교총장협의회장, 추교관 경북대 총동창회장을 비롯해 학생과 교수, 동문, 교직원, 내외빈 등이 참석했다.
경북대는 1946년 국립대학으로 승격된 대구사범대학, 대구의과대학, 대구농과대학 등 3개 대학을 모체로 1951년 국립종합대학교로 개편됐다. ‘진리, 긍지, 봉사’의 교시 아래 성장을 거듭해 온 경북대는 현재 18개 단과대학, 4개 독립학부 그리고 일반대학원과 2개의 전문대학원, 14개의 특수대학원 체제로 운영하며 29만여명의 졸업생을 배출한 국가거점국립대로 자리매김했다.
이날 행사는 개교 제80주년 영상 상영을 시작으로 총장 기념사, 내빈 축사, 비전 발표 및 비전 선포 퍼포먼스, 시상 및 감사패 수여 등의 순으로 진행됐다.
경북대는 이번 80주년 개교기념식과 연계해 향후 100년의 청사진을 제시하는 비전선포식을 함께 거행했다. 대학발전 비전으로 ‘세계가 주목하는 초일류 대학, KNU’를 공표하고, 대학발전 목표로 ‘글로벌 TOP 100위 대학 진입’을 제시했다.
이와 함께 비전 달성을 위한 3대 핵심전략으로 ▷진리 탐구(교육과 연구의 혁신) ▷긍지 추구(첨단분야 특성화 및 기초학문 보호) ▷봉사 실천(지역사회 동반성장 및 인류공동체 번영 기여)을 수립하고, 연구중심대학으로의 체질 개선과 대경권 성장 엔진으로서 지역과 국가 발전을 선도하겠다는 각오를 밝혔다.
이어 진행된 시상식에서는 경북대 발전에 기여한 기관에 대한 감사패 전달과 함께 한문학과 정병호 교수 등 교직원 총 102명에게 근속상을, 직원 7명에게 공로상을 수여했다.
창의적인 강의와 교육 기여도를 인정받은 교수 10명에게는 ‘우수강의상’이 수여됐다. 수상자는 엄기홍(정치외교학과), 김용구(통계학과), 김주현(응용화학공학부), 이시형(컴퓨터학부), 우지용(전자공학부), 이문규(국어교육과), 엄주영(지구과학교육과), 김성대(수의학과), 최현경(간호학과), 민경익(의생명융합공학과) 교수다. 그밖에 경북대 학술상과 원암학술상, Highly Cited Researcher Award, 자랑스러운 경대인상, 총동창회장상 등의 시상도 함께 진행됐다.
허영우 총장은 기념사를 통해 “경북대학교 80년은 곧 우리 현대사의 여정이다. 우리 대학의 길은 곧 시대와 공동체를 향한 책임의 역사이자, 미래를 향한 도전의 발자취였다.”라고 강조했다.
이어 “앞으로의 100년, ‘세계가 주목하는 초일류 대학 KNU’를 준비하겠다. 학령인구 감소, 지역 소멸 등 겹겹이 쌓인 도전 가운데, AI 대전환이라는 기회의 창이 함께 열리고 있다. 그러나, ‘퀀텀 변화’의 흐름을 잘 활용한다면 경북대의 다음 100년은 환하게 열릴 것이다.”라며 “경북대학교는 변화 앞에서 머뭇거리지 않겠다.”라고 밝혔다.
마지막으로 “경북대학교는 앞으로도 ‘진리·긍지·봉사’의 정신을 바탕으로 대한민국을 대표하는 국가거점국립대학을 넘어 세계가 주목하는 연구중심대학으로, 대학 교육 혁신의 플랫폼으로, 그리고 미래 세대의 희망이 되는 대학으로 더욱 힘차게 나아가겠다.”라고 전했다.

Kyungpook National University, led by President Young-Woo Heo, held its 80th Anniversary Ceremony and Vision Declaration Ceremony on May 27 at 2 p.m. in the university’s Main Auditorium, ahead of its 80th anniversary on May 28.
The ceremony was attended by distinguished guests, including Jeong-gi Kim, Acting Mayor of Daegu, National Assembly members In-sun Lee and Dal-hee Lee; Won-hwa Hong, President of the National Research Foundation of Korea; Ki-Jeong Lee, Chairman of the Korean Council for University Education; Jeong-Kyoum Kim, Chairman of the Council of Presidents of Flagship National Universities; Gyo-gwan Choo, President of the KNU Alumni Association; as well as students, faculty members, alumni, staff and other guests.
KNU traces its origins to three national colleges in Daegu – Daegu Normal College, Daegu Medical College, and Daegu College of Agriculture – which were elevated to national college status in 1946. In 1951, these colleges were integrated into a comprehensive national university.
Since then, guided by its educational motto, “Truth, Pride, and Service,” KNU has grown into one of Korea’s leading national flagship universities. Today, the university comprises 18 colleges, 4 independent schools, the Graduate School, 2 professional graduate schools, and 14 special-purpose graduate schools, and it has produced more than 290,000 alumni.
The ceremony began with a commemorative video marking KNU’s 80th anniversary, followed by President Young-Woo Heo’s commemorative address, congratulatory remarks from distinguished guests, a presentation of KNU’s vision and a vision declaration performance, and the presentation of awards and plaques of appreciation.
In conjunction with its 80th anniversary celebration, KNU also held a Vision Declaration Ceremony to present its blueprint for the next 100 years. The university declared “KNU, A Globally Recognized Top-Tier University” as its institutional vision and set the goal of becoming one of the world’s top 100 universities.
To achieve its vision, KNU established three core strategies: Pursuit of Truth (Innovation in Education and Research), Pursuit of Pride (Specialization in Cutting-Edge Fields and the Protection of Fundamental Academic Disciplines), and Practice of Service (Shared Growth with Local Communities and Contributions to the prosperity of the global community). The university also pledged to transform itself into a research-centered university and to lead regional and national development as a key growth engine for the Daegu-Gyeongbuk region.
The awards ceremony that followed featured the presentation of plaques of appreciation to organizations that contributed to the university’s development. Long-service awards were also presented to 102 faculty and staff members, including Professor Byeongho Jeong of the Department of Korean Literature in Classical Chinese, while 7 staff members received meritorious service awards.
The Excellent Teaching Award was presented to 10 professors in recognition of their creative teaching and contributions to education. The recipients were Kihong Eom (Department of Political Science and Diplomacy), Yongku Kim (Department of Statistics), Jookyun Kim (Department of Applied Chemistry), Sihyung Lee (School of Computer Science and Engineering), Jiyong Woo (School of Electronics Engineering), Moonkyu Lee (Department of Korean Language and Literature Education), Jooyoung Eom (Department of Earth Science and Education), Sungdae Kim (Department of Veterinary Medicine), Hyunkyung Choi (Department of Nursing), and Kyoung-Ik Min (Department of Biomedical Convergence Science and Technology).
The ceremony also featured the presentation of the Kyungpook National University Academic Award, the Wonam Academic Award, the Highly Cited Researcher Award, the Proud KNU Person Award, and the KNU Alumni Association President’s Award.
In his commemorative address, KNU President Young-Woo Heo emphasized that “The 80-year history of Kyungpook National University is a journey through Korea’s modern history. The path of our university has been one of responsibility to society and the community, as well as one of continuous challenges in pursuit of a better future.”
He added, “As we look toward the next 100 years, we will prepare KNU to become a top-tier university recognized around the world. Amid challenges such as a declining school-age population and regional decline, new opportunities are emerging through the transformation brought by AI. If we successfully harness this era of quantum change, KNU’s next century will be brighter than ever.” He continued, “Kyungpook National University will not hesitate in the face of change.”
President Heo concluded, “Guided by the spirit of Truth, Pride, and Service, KNU will continue to move forward beyond its role as one of Korea’s leading national flagship universities, to become a globally recognized research-centered university, a platform for innovation in higher education, and a source of hope for future generations.”
