KNU Establishes Comprehensive Semiconductor Talent Development Ecosystem Connecting Undergraduate Education, Graduate Studies, and Research

There is a national university outside the Seoul metropolitan area that has quietly driven the century-long vision for K-semiconductors. Since being designated by the Korean government as a specialized university for electronics in 1972, Kyungpook National University (KNU) has spent more than five decades educating many of the key professionals who have driven the nation's electronics industry.
Amid the recent nationwide competition to cultivate semiconductor talent, KNU has emerged as a frontrunner. This achievement is the result of KNU's success in securing a series of major government-funded initiatives and building an integrated ecosystem that seamlessly connects undergraduate education, graduate education, and advanced research infrastructure. Following its selection for the Ministry of Education's Semiconductor-Specialized University Support Project and the Regional Semiconductor Joint Research Center Project in 2023, KNU was also selected for the Ministry of Trade, Industry and Energy's Advanced Industry Specialized Graduate School Support Project (Semiconductor category) in 2024. These initiatives have enabled KNU to establish a comprehensive talent development system, spanning undergraduate education, graduate-level specialization, and open research infrastructure, accelerating the cultivation of highly skilled semiconductor professionals.

Undergraduate Education Strengthened to Meet Industry Needs: 1,258 Students Already Participating, Exceeding Original Target
Led by the School of Electronics Engineering, with participation from the Departments of Materials Science and Engineering and Physics, KNU's Semiconductor-Specialized University Support Project is rapidly transforming undergraduate education to better align with industry demands. An interdisciplinary curriculum has been established based on three specialized tracks in system semiconductor design, semiconductor devices and processes, and semiconductor materials, parts, and equipment.
A key focus is strengthening students' practical engineering capabilities. The number of theoretical courses in the project has increased from 21 to 26, while laboratory and design courses, including project-based learning (PBL), have expanded from 6 to 16. Hands-on training goes far beyond conventional visits to semiconductor fabrication facilities. Students gain direct experience by completing the entire semiconductor fabrication process in one of Korea's finest university semiconductor cleanrooms. In addition, the PBL curriculum is conducted in collaboration with 41 companies, including 4 major corporations (e.g., DB HiTek), allowing students to solve real-world engineering challenges proposed by industry.
KNU has also continued investing in educational infrastructure. The number of laboratory equipment and software assets supporting the curriculum has more than doubled, growing from 130 to 270. Students benefit from various scholarship programs, including the Entry, Talent, and APEX Scholarships, as well as opportunities to participate in intensive short courses, career and entrepreneurship academies, and domestic and international academic conferences.
The program's success is reflected in its outcomes. Although the original four-year goal was to train 1,100 undergraduate students, 1,258 students have already participated, exceeding the target. More recently, the program was recognized as an Outstanding Best Practice at the Ministry of Education's 2026 Advanced Industry Specialized University Results Sharing Conference, further validating the excellence of KNU's educational model.

Master's and Doctoral Students Partner with Industry to Advance Collaborative Research
KNU is also strengthening graduate education by emphasizing industry-connected training and collaborative research with corporate partners. The university integrates companies' technological needs directly into graduate education and research projects, enabling master's and doctoral students to address real industrial challenges throughout their studies.
Following the establishment of the Department of Semiconductor Engineering within the Graduate School in 2024, KNU expanded and reorganized the program into the School of Semiconductor Convergence Engineering in 2025 to further strengthen its educational system in response to industry demand. The school currently offers three specialization tracks: IT-Convergent Mechanical Engineering, Semiconductor Devices and Processes, and Chemical Engineering and Advanced Materials. A total of 41 faculty members from 9 related departments participate in interdisciplinary education and research covering the entire semiconductor value chain.
Industry collaboration has also expanded significantly. Through the establishment of the KNU Industry-Academia-Research Consortium, which brings together large corporations as well as medium-sized and small enterprises, KNU incorporates the real-world technological needs of companies into its educational programs. The number of participating companies has increased from 34 to 47.
Student participation in field-based research has more than doubled. The number of industry-academia collaborative projects has increased significantly, from 16 in 2025 to 32 project teams as of the first semester of the 2026 academic year. By taking companies’ technological needs and real-world industry challenges as their research topics, students gain hands-on experience throughout the entire research and development process, from developing research plans and conducting experiments and analyses to validating results, thereby strengthening their practical research capabilities.
The program has also demonstrated tangible academic and industry collaboration outcomes. During 2025, a total of 5 patent applications were filed in the fields of semiconductor materials and devices, and energy storage. These include advanced semiconductor technologies such as thermoelectric device fabrication using hybrid thermoelectric materials, organic phototransistors incorporating visible-light-responsive polymers, and organic field-effect transistors based on low-photosensitivity polymers. During the same period, 4 papers were published in SCI(E)-indexed journals.
Building on a talent development system which connects industry needs with education and research and translates those outcomes into collaborative projects, patents, and research publications, KNU will continue to cultivate industry-ready, problem-solving master's and doctoral graduates.

Strong Infrastructure of the Institute of Semiconductor Fusion Technology Secures Ministry of Education’s Regional Semiconductor Joint Research Center Project
Underlying this talent development ecosystem, which spans both undergraduate and graduate education, is KNU’s unrivaled research infrastructure. At the heart of this infrastructure is the Institute of Semiconductor Fusion Technology, which has played a pivotal role in education and research. Occupying a total area of 2,629㎡, the institute houses 2 cleanroom facilities and laboratories for materials and device measurement and analysis. It is the second-largest of its kind among four-year universities in Korea, following only Seoul National University.
The institute is capable of carrying out modular fabrication processes, ranging from semiconductor unit processes to the fabrication of display devices, sensors, CMOS devices, and microelectromechanical systems (MEMS). It is equipped with 74 types of equipment valued at approximately KRW 9.3 billion. Notably, a substantial portion of its equipment is dedicated to education and training for developing professionals in key semiconductor process areas, including measurement and analysis, photolithography, and etching.
Not only graduate students but also undergraduate students have the opportunity to enter industry-grade cleanrooms and gain hands-on experience designing and fabricating semiconductor devices. The institute also serves as a semiconductor hub for the Daegu-Gyeongbuk region, providing retraining and hands-on training to an average of 570 professionals from regional companies and other institutions each year.
Building on this proven infrastructure and operational expertise, KNU secured the Ministry of Education’s Regional Semiconductor Joint Research Center Project. The university plans to expand the existing institute through both vertical and horizontal extensions, creating a four-story research facility with a building footprint of 3,800 m² and a total floor area of 5,205.68 m².
The expanded facility will include a semiconductor design laboratory, a next-generation device fabrication laboratory, and shared process laboratories for joint use by industry and research institutes, further enhancing its existing 6-inch silicon (Si) wafer-based end-to-end semiconductor fabrication support system.
During the first phase of the project, KNU will establish an open R&D infrastructure capable of supporting both process-specialized research (etching) and application-specific research (power semiconductors). In the second phase, the university will install 34 additional process equipment systems worth a total of KRW 28 billion.
Ultimately, KNU aims to establish one of Korea’s leading semiconductor R&D hubs, supporting the entire research cycle from chip design and fabrication to evaluation. Construction is scheduled to begin in December 2026, with completion targeted for June 2029.
