KNU Selected for the Ministry of Climate, Energy and Environment’s ‘Energy Technology Sharing University’ Program
-KRW 16.8 Billion Investment to Train Master’s and Doctoral-Level Professionals for the AI Transformation (AX) of the Energy Industry
Kyungpook National University (KNU) has been selected for a new project under the Ministry of Climate, Energy and Environment’s 2026 Energy Human Resources Development Program (Energy Technology Sharing University). Through the project, KNU will train master’s and doctoral-level professionals capable of responding to the AI transformation (AX) of the energy industry.
Following its selection, KNU will implement the Daegu Regional Specialized AI Transformation Energy Technology Sharing University Human Resources Development Project (AX-ETU) through 2031, with a total investment of approximately KRW 16.8 billion, including KRW 11 billion in government funding.
KNU will serve as the lead institution, with Keimyung University, Daegu Gyeongbuk Institute of Science & Technology (DGIST), and Daegu Technopark participating as partner universities and institutions. A total of 16 local energy and materials/components companies, including L&F, AVACO, and Valeo Kapec, will also participate as industry partners. The project will be led by Professor Youngkyoo Kim of the School of Chemical Engineering and Applied Chemistry at KNU.
The project’s key objective is to establish an education and research system that integrates AI transformation technologies into the areas of energy efficiency improvement, demand management, and energy storage within the regional energy industry.
With KNU at its center, the partner universities and institutions will establish an energy technology-sharing platform by linking their respective education and research infrastructures. They will also jointly develop and operate educational programs, including credit exchanges between the universities and shared online courses. In addition, industry-academic cooperative projects reflecting the actual technological needs of local companies will provide a field-oriented talent development system that connects education, research, and employment.
Over the course of the project, KNU and its partners aim to support 305 master’s and doctoral-level participants, produce 125 master’s and doctoral degree holders, and cultivate 130 certified professionals. The project also aims to help 52 graduates secure employment with participating local companies. Furthermore, the project will establish a virtuous cycle linking practical training, industry-academic projects and certification, and employment at local companies, based on industry demand, thereby actively supporting the settlement of highly qualified talent in the region.
Professor Youngkyoo Kim, the project director, noted, “This project is significant in that it goes beyond the conventional model of human resource development centered on individual universities and establishes a regional talent development model in which universities, research institutes, and companies share educational and research infrastructure and work together to solve problems encountered in the industrial field. We will successfully implement the project to produce the master’s and doctoral-level professionals needed by the energy industry and enable them to lead technological innovation at local companies.”
