*Title of original paper: A state-of-the-art review on Fe-based metal–organic frameworks (Fe-MOFs) for removal of hazardous dyes in aqueous environment: Mechanisms, modifications, and future prospects
*Abstract
Dyecontaminated wastewater continues to pose major environmental challenges due to the high chemical stability, toxicity, and limited biodegradability of synthetic dyes. Iron-based metal–organic frameworks (Fe-MOFs) and their derivatives have recently emerged as highly promising materials for dye removal through both adsorption and photocatalytic degradation. This review exclusively summarizes research progress reported in the last five years (2020–2025) on Fe-MOFs and their derivatives for dye removal, providing an updated and focused understanding of current advancements. Key developments in Fe-MOF synthesis, activation methods, and structural modification are discussed, highlighting the importance of their tunable porosity, abundant Fesingle bondO clusters, and visible-light responsiveness. Mechanistic pathways, including photocatalysis, persulfate activation, and photo-Fenton reactions, are examined to elucidate reactive species generation, charge-transfer dynamics, and redox-driven dye degradation. Additionally, recent progress in Fe-MOF composites, including semiconductor hybrids, carbon-supported structures, and defect-engineered variants, is presented to highlight their enhanced performance, stability, and recyclability. The review also analyzes adsorption behavior and dyeMOF interactions, with particular attention to the influence of pore structure, surface charge, and coordinatively unsaturated sites. Despite considerable advancements, challenges remain regarding water stability, regeneration efficiency, and large-scale implementation. Overall, this review provides a concise and up-to-date assessment of Fe-MOF based materials for dye remediation while outlining future prospects for sustainable water purification technologies.
