경북대학교가 영국 글로벌 대학 평가기관인 THE(Times Higher Education, 타임즈 고등교육)가 27일 발표한 세계대학 영향력 평가(THE University Impact Rankings 2022)에서 세계 13위, 국내 1위에 올랐다. 경북대는 지난 2020년 세계 99위, 2021년 세계 54위에 이어 올해는 41단계 상승한 세계 13위를 차지하는 성과를 거뒀다.

‘THE 세계대학 영향력 평가’는 대학의 연구력(논문 수 및 인용도 등) 뿐만 아니라 사회적·지구적 책무를 중요한 평가 요소로 삼고 있다. 지구적 난제 해결을 위해 대학 공공성 평가를 하는 것은 THE 세계대학 영향력 평가가 유일하다. 평가 기준은 2015년 UN 총회에서 채택된 17개 지속가능발전목표(SDGs) 달성에 대한 기여도다. 올해 평가에는 106개국 1,406개 대학이 참여했다. 평가 분야 중 △지속 가능한 도시와 공동체(SDG11) 세계 6위, △기아 해소(SDG2) 세계 13위, △산업, 혁신과 인프라(SDG9) 및 △양질의 일자리와 경제성장(SDG8)에서 각각 세계 21위를 차지했다.

경북대는 활발한 산학연 협력 도모와 기업역량 강화 사업 추진으로 일자리 창출과 기업 성장의 혁신 역량 제공에 기여하고 있다. 또한 도서관, 미술관, 박물관 등을 활용한 다양한 전시, 체험, 교육 행사 개최로 지역 주민들과 활발히 소통하고 있으며, 지난해에는 전국 대학 중 처음으로 ‘2040 탄소중립 캠퍼스’를 선언하며 환경 부문에서 좋은 평가를 받았다.

홍원화 경북대 총장은 “대학의 사회적 책무를 중시하는 THE 세계대학 영향력 평가에서 국내 대학 최초로 세계 20위권 안에 진입한 것은 새로운 시대를 선도하는 준비된 경북대의 도약을 보여준 것이다. 앞으로도 지속가능발전목표(SDGs)가 지향하는 사회의 실현을 위한 교육 및 연구 활동에 최선을 다하겠다.”라고 말했다.

Kyungpook National University Ranks 13th in the World and 1st in Korea in ‘2022 THE World University Impact Rankings’

Kyungpook National University ranked 13th in the world and 1st in Korea in the 2022 Times Higher Education (THE) University Impact Rankings, which were announced on April 27th by THE, a global university evaluation agency based in the UK. KNU ranked 13th in the world, up 41 spots this year, after being ranked 99th in the world in 2020 and 54th in 2021.

The ‘THE World University Impact Assessment’ considers not only a university’s research power (number of papers and citations, etc.), but also its social and global responsibilities as important evaluation factors. The THE World University Impact Assessment is the only assessment body that evaluates the public nature of universities with regard to solving global challenges. The evaluation criteria comprise the contributions toward the achievement of the 17 Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) adopted by the UN General Assembly in 2015. 1,406 universities from 106 countries participated in this years evaluation. Among these 17 SDGs, KNU Ranked 6th in the world for Sustainable Cities and Communities (SDG 11), 13th for Zero Hunger (SDG 2), 21st for Industry, Innovation, and Infrastructure (SDG 9), and 21st for Decent Work and Economic Growth (SDG 8).

Kyungpook National University is contributing to job creation and providing innovative capabilities for corporate growth by promoting active industry-university-research cooperation and corporate competency strengthening projects. In addition, KNU actively communicates with local residents by hosting various exhibitions, experiential opportunities, and educational events at its libraries, art galleries, and museums. Last year, it was the first university in the country to declare a ‘2040 Carbon-Neutral Campus,’ which was received positively in the environmental sector.

KNU President Hong Won-hwa noted, “The fact that KNU is the first domestic university to enter the top 20 in the world in the THE University Impact Rankings, which emphasize the social responsibilities of universities, shows that Kyungpook National University is ready to lead a new era. We will continue to do our best in education and research activities for the realization of a society that the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) aim for.”
